Technicians - Science Museum

JAC Studios, Factory Settings, CNC Projects

Role - Product Developer and Production Manager

At the end of 2022 the Science Museum opened a new gallery to encourage young professionals to take up careers in technology. The exhibition highlights the importance of technicians in the modern world and shows the variety of careers available to them.

JAC Studios

Welcoming you at both entrances are two 5m high display walls. Designed by JAC Studios in Denmark these displays housed solid wood sculptures showcasing the tools and equipment used by technicians. I was brought onto the team to develop and manufacture these pieces ready for installation.

Supplied with simple mesh models it was my job to remodel these files and develop the designs to incorporate hidden fixing details within them. Working closely with the designer we were able to find a design for all the items that kept in line with his aesthetics while maintaining manufacturability.

All parts were carefully modelled with production in mind. For example, every component fitted into standard wood thicknesses to reduce material quantity and preparation costs. Grain direction was always considered to ensure structural integrity and machine limitations were always considered to enable easy manufacturing.

Using my network of suppliers I was able to produce cut files ready for their machines, ensuring there was no hold-up in the production timeline. Pieces were designed and manufactured on both 3-axis and 5-axsi CNC routers.
